Bible Question: How much difference is there between the 1985 copywritten version of the NASB and the 1995 version. I love my marked up copy. Do I need to buy the updated version? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Pastor Gerry! The 1977 Edition of the NASB differs slightly from the 1995 NASB Update, and this continued devotion to translation is reflected by Lockman in the Preface to the Updated NASB.. "The Editorial Board has continued to function since publication of the complete Bible in 1971. This edition of the NASB represents revisions and refinements recommended over the last several years as well as thorough research based on modern English usage." (...) “Thou,” “Thee” and “Thy” are not used in this edition and have been rendered as “You” and “Your.” Also, I have noticed simple changes in word usage and sentence structure in certain places in the NAS95 that have made it much more clearer while retaining the accuracy of the NAS77. So if you have the NAS77, then I highly recommend that you keep that version! There is no need for you to disgard it in favor of the NAS95 if you have, in fact, chosen the NAS77 as your primary version of choice. Perhaps you should stick with the NAS77 since you have "marked it up" and no doubt know it so well! Both the NAS77 and 95 are extremely accurate and largely indistinguishable from each other except in certain places where the NAS95 attempts (and succeeds) in making a passage more readable. I myself used a NAS77 before I purchased the 95 Update and I have come to embrace the 95 Update as my Bible version of choice! So I highly recommend both, but my favorite is the NAS95. Blessings to you, Nolan |
