Bible Question:
“The Lord's supper or communion” I am in conflict over the practice of closed communion (only members of the local church). I recently joined a church thinking that it would not that big of an issue. Every thing else was good. But now I am not able to reconcile this practice in my heart and with the Word of God. I am thinking of leaving the church because of this practice. I am with heavy heart and troubled spirit. Please help. |
Bible Answer: Hi, dwilde! Just to supplement Emmaus' post: The blessing-cup, which we bless, is it not a sharing in the blood of christ; and the loaf of bread which we break, is it not a sharing in the body of Christ? (1 Corinthians 10:16) Whenever you eat this bread, then, and drink this cup, you are proclaiming the Lord's death until he comes. Therefore anyone who eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily is answerable for the body and blood of the Lord. (1 Corinthians 11:26-27) It is clear by Paul's statements that we are not just to gather together and partake of the Lord as we feel (going from one place to another, sharing in on the Lord regardless of our personal condition (spiritual standing). I find that it is most appropriate for the Church to safeguard against any abuses that might be perpetrated by the uninitiated, this includes unprepared guests and even infiltrators who might seek to desecrate the Body of Christ.
