Bible Question:
1 King 2 : 1 to 35 1/ Why didn't David kill Joab himself but left it to the hands of Solomon instead? 2/ For what reason did Solomon kill Adonijah? (He had promised that he would not kill him unless evil was found in him - 1King 1:52). Thanks for answering in advance. Azure |
Bible Answer: Dear Azure, I hope you find these answers helpful: (1) Joab was the eldest son of Zeruiah -- David's sister -- which made him David's nephew. Joab killed Abner, Amasa, and Absalom, drawing David's enmity near the end of his life. However, David might have been loathe to take vengeance because Joab was a family member. In addition, David promised that Joab would always occupy the position of commander of his army. (2 Samuel 19:13.) Note that there is also some reason to suppose that Solomon might not have intended to have Joab killed outright, but intended to try him his crimes. (2) Solomon's remarkable clemency toward Adonijah was in the form of a covenant. As such it was conditional. Adonijah violated the conditions of the covenant by continuing his rebellion through palace, political intrigue (2 Kings 2:13-18). This proved that Adonijah was not a "worthy man," with the result that Solomon followed through with the promised consequences of the covenant (1 Kings 2:24). In Him, Doc |
