Bible Question: Are there any references to Hell in the Old Testament? I see many "punishments" but nothing eternal. |
Bible Answer: In the King James Version of the Bible, the Hebrew word "Sheol" (Strong's Number 07585) is translated "hell" 31 times. It is translated "grave" 31 times and "pit" 3 times. So the Hebrew word "Sheol" does not refer to and is not translated as "hell" in every place where it appears in the OT. It would be a mistake to say that in every instance Sheol should be translated grave. And it would also be a mistake to say that in every instance Sheol must be translated hell. |
