Bible Question: What is the core biblical teaching on the supernatural gifts of the Holy Spirit ceasing after the apostolic age? As a part of a conservative mainline denomination (PCA) I am having trouble undersatnding their dogmatic position on the issue. I know why folks say that the supernatural gifts are still alive and well for those that are open to it...but what I don't here is a coherant expanation to the contrary. Thanks. |
Bible Answer: Hi mdkane88 and welcome to the forum. The biggest reason people say the gifts have ceased is in my opinion they are afraid of them. The Biblical answer many give is 1 Cor. 13:8-10 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part; 10but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. In this passage you will see tongues and prophecy are said to end when the perfect comes. To me that means when Jesus comes. However in 2 nd. century church in an attempt to minimize “Montanism” the Bishop of Rome (what the pope was called before he was called pope) declared that all special gifts ceased with the closing the cannon of scripture. Tertullian of Carthage was Montanism’s most famous convert. So you see the people most vocal about the gifts being dead are also the ones that say the Pope is false prophet yet they support his contention that the physical gifts of the Spirit have ceased. Confusing isn’t it? |
