Bible Question:
jesus called the father the only true God. (John 17;3) If the father is the only true God then how could the Son be also the only true God? |
Bible Answer: Beethoven, in addition to the comprehensive exegesis that Radioman posted to your question, perhaps consideration of a theological concept called KENOSIS would help you with your understanding of this verse, John 17:3. The Bible teaches that the incarnate (in the flesh) Christ was fully God and fully man. Kenosis is a reference to the "emptying" of the Son in incarnation (Phil. 2:7). Biblically it entails the temporary and voluntary surrender of the exercise of certain divine attributes by the Son of God while He was on the earth. Additionally, it would be helpful to consider what the Bible teaches about the Triunity (Trinity) of God. This is the distrinctive and essential Christian doctrine that there is one God in three Persons. The Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. There is a distinction between the Persons so that the Father is not the Son, the Father is not the Spirit, and the Son is not the Spirit. Each is a Person. The Holy Spirit is not to be envisioned as a mere force or influence. Can man have a perfect understanding of the Triune nature of God? Can man lift up his voice to the clouds and make an abundance of water cover him or send out bolts of lightning? (see Job 38:34,35). The answer to both questions is obviously no. Man is finite, he is limited, he has his tether. God is infinite and transcendent. If man should choose to wait to believe in and trust God until he has perfect understanding of all things and knows all that God knows, he will wait forever. I view it God's business to run His universe and mine to know His will for me and to do it in that little corner of His world in which He sees fit to let me live. --Hank |
