Subject: Did Jesus visit hell when he died on the |
Bible Note: CJB I see your getting some very confusing answers. First off the word most commonly translated hell in the Bible is Hades. Hades by Jewish tradition was the holding place of the dead spirits. Luke 16:19-31 Jesus tells us Hades is divided by a gulf, on one side is hot dry place and the other Abraham’s bosom or paradise. From the Luke we see the unrighteous that die go to the hot dry side and the righteous go to Abraham’s bosom. When Jesus died he went to Hades (Abraham’s bosom side) and preached the Good News. In Ephesians 4:8 it tells us Jesus lead captivity captive in other words Jesus emptied out the Abraham’s bosom and took the saints home to heaven where they await their immortal bodies. Paul tells us to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord 2 Cor. 5:8. Therefore the Abraham’s bosom or paradise side of Hades is empty. However the hot dry side still have occupants that await the White Throne of Judgement Rev 20:11. The problem many have is applying the incorrect terminology to Hell/Hades. Many picture it as a place with blazing fire and the habitat of Satan and his demons. We see pictures of the devil with his red outfit and pitch fork torturing people. Nothing could be further from the truth. First Satan wants nothing to do with Hell. Second hell is not the place of punishment for living an unrighteous life, one without Jesus, the Lake of Fire is! And Satan is not master of it but rather becomes an inmate of it. Rev 20:10. I hope this helps clear up the confusion EdB |
