Bible Question: Is Hollywood generally faithful to the Bible in film depictions involving events in Scripture? There are many depictions in film of the life of Christ and many other Biblical characters throughout the history of filmmaking. However, in my opinion, Hollywood has done a very poor job at taking the events of the Bible and putting them onscreen. For examples of 'epics' that are very questionable and even 'blasphemous' (in my opinion) are: "Jesus" (2000), "Mary" (1989), "Godspell" (1973), and "Jesus Christ Superstar". A few of the more 'respected' depictions of Jesus in Hollywood are: "Jesus" (1979), "The King of Kings" (1927), "The Greatest Story Ever Told", "Jesus of Nazareth" (1977), and "The Miracle Maker" (2000). Tell me, is it impossible to make a motion picture of Christ that is Biblically accurate? |
Bible Answer: Nolan: With God all things are possible. But the thing is God did not make, either directly or indirectly, these sensational films. Man made them -- man, not God. Another negative example to add to your list is that animated (cartoon) film that was popular a year or two ago about the life of Moses. As one reviewer put it, "In this film Moses is portrayed more as an action hero than the man of faith that he was." Is it impossible to make a motion picture of Christ that is Biblically accurate? Perhaps it is not impossible, just highly improbable. :-) JVH0212 |
