Bible Question: Is Hollywood generally faithful to the Bible in film depictions involving events in Scripture? There are many depictions in film of the life of Christ and many other Biblical characters throughout the history of filmmaking. However, in my opinion, Hollywood has done a very poor job at taking the events of the Bible and putting them onscreen. For examples of 'epics' that are very questionable and even 'blasphemous' (in my opinion) are: "Jesus" (2000), "Mary" (1989), "Godspell" (1973), and "Jesus Christ Superstar". A few of the more 'respected' depictions of Jesus in Hollywood are: "Jesus" (1979), "The King of Kings" (1927), "The Greatest Story Ever Told", "Jesus of Nazareth" (1977), and "The Miracle Maker" (2000). Tell me, is it impossible to make a motion picture of Christ that is Biblically accurate? |
Bible Answer: Yes I believe it is Nolan. God can do anything. He can arrange for anyone to write a biblically accurate movie if He so chooses. Many have tried. One problem is the general public is not ready to accept it. The movie is unable to generate the revenue to pay for the making of the movie so they don't make them. Many of the secular world considers the bible boring and would not even attend or buy such a movie. I believe the movies that they do make such as the ones you listed they do try to make accurate but then you have to remember that they still have to sell the movie to the public. Hence they need to add some excitement and this is where the movie looses its accuracy. Check your local Christian book store where they do rent movies. There are some there that you can watch and using the bible you will have the script right in your hand. prayon |
