Bible Question: What distinguishes a denominational church from a nondenominational church? |
Bible Answer: Teacher: There is a sense in which all groups calling themselves "churches" are denominations, sects, or even cults, but there can also be a sense in which all denominations are not truly churches, for their teaching may be so patently unscriptural that by any orthodox measure they could not in fact be a part of Christ's church. There are many variations of creed, faith, practice, government, etc. among groups (denominations). The fact that some groups call themselves nondenominational or, in some cases, the "true" church, does not necessarily mean that they are any less "denominational" than those who do not deny that they are a denomination. This is perhaps an overly simplistic answer to an extremely complex question, but I didn't set out to attempt in one post to write a comprehensive treatise on the subject :-) --Hank |
