Bible Question: Does the Bible give specific guidelines as to who or what the tithes given to the church are for? Does this go along with the law of the land? |
Bible Answer: The tithes were to support the functions of the Levitcal Priesthood, the orphans and the widows. It was not for maintenance of the temple (church) as some would believe today. Money was never tithed in the OT or NT. Only the holy things of God..i.e. produce from the Land, all agricultural products. Read Duet 14:22-29. The Levites did not have an inheritance...thus God commanded the Isrealties to support them by tithing. However if you were unable to bring your tithe to the place of worship, God commanded you to turn the tithe into MONEY so that you may spend it on anythng your heart desires. Tithing was a simple way of God instructing the nation to care for the levites who conduct temple service and those who could not support themselves...i.e. widows and orphans. In today's times we are taught that tithing is still mandated by God...well the only scripture we hear of is Mal 3:8. We never here any other scripture in the pulpits when it comes to tithing. And still that verse is talking about food only. In the NT and after the resurrection of Christ, tithing is not mandated. We are called to give the best we have to God and the church, whatever that may be. Do the research for yourself...try to find out if tithing was ever in the form of money and if it was used for the maintenance of the temple. If you'd like to discuss more..just let me know and I'll show you what the BIBLE says about tithing. Not what our doctrines teach today. |
