Bible Question: Why do many Churches ignore 1st Corinthians 14:34-35 and 1st Timothy 2:12? |
Bible Answer: Gump First are you sure your reading those verses in context and understand their meaning in context? There are some churches that read 1 Cor 14:34-35 that women are to be silent and therefore women are silent. Others read this to mean women should not question their husband in public but wait until their home. Still others teach that women became disruptive asking their husband questions in church and were being asked to refrain from doing so until they got home. As for 1 Tim 2:12 Paul says that he did not allow women to teach men. Maybe he found out men refused to learn from women and by trying to do found it to be a waste of time. Not many men listen to women when they say stop and ask directions :-) Or he could be talking about women that usurp men’s leadership and try to take over. I read 1 Cor. 14:34-35 to mean a women should not question her husband in public but wait until they get home to discuss the issue. I read 1 Tim 2:12 as a women should not try to take authority over men. However this does not prevent a woman from teaching a class under the covering of her husband. Notice in both these cases it instructs a women to be in submission, We know biblically a woman is to be in submission to her father and upon marriage to her husband. No where does it say a woman is in submission to just any man. If we use the submission thought and put these passages in context 1 Cor. 14:34-35 is saying a women is to be in submission and if she has a question let remain silent in church and ask the question at home. Why would God say this unless the women was asking a question which embarrassed or challenged her husband or father in public. In 1 Tim 2:12 it says Paul does not allow a women is to be submissive and not to teach or exercise authority over man. If she is being submissive it is to her husband or father and she shouldn’t try to exercise authority over other men. However I can still see a window for women to teach if she is doing it under her husband’s or father’s authority. Then it isn’t her authority but rather his. EdB |
