Bible Question: I have the Life Application Study Bible and several commentaries but now I am interested in purchasing a new study Bible. I am considering Ryrie, Scofield or Open Study Bible. Comments and/or suggestions? |
Bible Answer: For excellent guidelines to consider when choosing a study Bible, I would highly recommend reading: "How to Choose a Study Bible," www.equip.org/free/DB135.htm You ask: "What is the very best Reference Bible?" (Short answer:) This is not an objective question. The answers will vary from one individual to another. But in my experience and opinion, the best and most useful reference Bibles (not necessarily in this order) are: . the New Scofield Reference Bible . the Ryrie Study Bible Expanded Edition . the Zondervan NASB Study Bible (also available in the NIV translation). . the MacArthur Study Bible (Full answer:) My most indispensable Bible and the one whose notes I most often quote on the Forum is the MacArthur Study Bible. The most denominationally neutral Bible in the above list is the Zondervan NASB (or NIV) Study Bible. The ones I have become emotionally attached to over a period of many years are principally the New Scofield and the Ryrie. Following are some of the features of the Ryrie and the Zondervan NASB. 1) The Ryrie Study Bible Expanded Edition. ISBN 0-8024-3870-9 Published by Moody Press. Available in hardcover, bonded leather, and genuine leather. I started using the original edition Ryrie in 1978. It is my personal favorite all-around use Bible, used frequently to research my Questions, Answers and Notes for the Forum, and the one I use when I teach Bible classes at my church. The Ryrie is considered a subjectively oriented study Bible, conservative, dispensational. "The Ryrie Study Bible can be characterized as the Scofield Reference Bible for the end of the twentieth century . . . [it] has a strong following among evangelicals." (John R. Kohlenberger III, "How to Choose a Study Bible," www.equip.org/free/DB135.htm) 2) The Zondervan NASB Study Bible. ISBN 0-310-91092-7 Published by Zondervan. Hardcover MSRP 39.99 (but you can get it for less than that). Probably available also in bonded and genuine leather. It is a top recommendation and favorite of mine because it is very, very thorough, denominationally neutral, and packed with useful, easy-to-use information, including: the NASB translators' notes (not included in the Ryrie); over 20,000 in-text study notes, adapted from the best-selling NIV Study Bible (NIVSB is considered a subjectively oriented study Bible, conservative, evangelical); a center-column reference system with over 100,000 references; an extensive NASB concordance, and more. According to the advertising copy: "The Zondervan NASB Study Bible is hands-down the most comprehensive, up-to-date study Bible available." I feel this claim is not exaggerated. Either of these NASB95 study Bibles are available for purchase at your local Christian bookstore or from an online bookseller. |
