Bible Question: Where did the council of Nicea take place? |
Bible Answer: Alex, They met in Nice. There were two councils of Nicea. The first in 325. Licinius, co-emperor in the east, tried to deal with Church conflicts, especially those involving Arianism. Called by the Emperor Constantine to settle the question of Christ's divinity raised by Arius. But there were other matters to be discussed. At the end of the council a creed was ratified, one which forms the antecedent to the statement of faith usually called the Nicene Creed. The second met in 787, and dealt with doctrine concerning the cult of sacred images and question of the intercession of saints, among other things. Steve |
