Bible Question:
Who are the 24 elders in this verse? Thank you. |
Bible Answer: Hi Food, The 24 elders are not specifically identified in scripture. The could be representative of a larger group, as were the 24 priests chosen to represent the priesthood in 1 Chronicles 24. Many people teach that the 24 Elders represent the Church. Since John has a number of conversations with an individual elder, it seems unlikely that that they are symbolic of a group. They seem to be individual persons. They could be 24 men of the elders of Israel. Isaiah 24:23 “Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients [elders] gloriously.” Throughout the Old and New Testaments, the term elders [presbyteros – Greek] refers to either simply those who are old, or those who have positions of governing, administration, or authority. I think that these twenty-four elders could be Enoch, Elijah, perhaps Moses, maybe Jonadab. In Matthew 27:52-53 [And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.] A resurrection took place when Jesus was killed. Nothing more is said about these saints that were raised from the dead. These may be the elders, those whom God has selected to reign with him, and to be His friends until the time is come to collect all of His people. We simply don't know. These are some of my speculations, you have already seen some others. I hope this helps. Love in Christ, Mark |
