Bible Question: NICOLAITANES? |
Bible Answer: If we look only at the Bible for an answer we are faced with several obvious things. We could look through New Testament scriptures and see if they are mentioned. We could look at the name Nicolaitan for some sort of meaning associated with the name. We could look at the context and see if the reason for Christ's condemnation of the Nicolaitans is given. Lastly you can look at tradition and other writings but I never put much stock in the other writings, since doing so brings in all sorts of various opinions of men. I will let you decide if there is any connection with another Nicolas in the New Testament. Looking at the name it seems to mean corrupter of the people, some say conqueror of the people. Whatever it was that they taught the effect might have been to corrupt the people. The fact is that whatever they taught it was hated by Christ. That is strong. We are not talking about mere differences of opinion on which day to keep sabbath. The doctrine was of nature that Caused Christ to say he Hates it. If you consider the other named doctrinal teachings in the over all passage you are faced with the doctrine of Balaam and the Doctrine of Jezebel, both have similar emphasis. Eating things sacrificed to idols and committing fornication. Now for shortness sake I will focus only on fornication. Consider a doctrine that somehow teaches that saint can commit fornication and still be a saint, or a christian, or a church. According to this context and sense there are no other details given, we must conclude that the Nicolataines taught something similar to the doctrine of Jezebel and Balaam. That a saint could compromise with the world and still be a saint. Sound like any doctrines you know of? Yes these doctrines are still with us today. They have never left. They come wrapped in new names from time to time, but it is the same demons behind them that have been strategiezing against the sons of God sense the days of Cain and Enoch. May God Bless you in your study of His Word |
