Bible Question:
Who was their first love? If it is Christ, how could all they did (vv 2-3) caused to leave their first love? What things were they doing at first (vs 5) that did cause to leave their first love? Can we work hard for Him, yet not love Him? How can we return to our first love? |
Bible Answer: Hi Steve, I've thought about this too a little bit. I'm not sure I have much of an answer, but those verses remind me of a person that begins with a fire for the Lord that is so great they desire to do everything and anything He leads them to do just because they love Him so much -- and then later that same person when the fire is diminished, doing the good works, but the fire is gone. Or another way of saying it maybe, is that they are going through the motions, but there is not a heart for the Lord there -- only works. Could that be what it's talking about? You said: Can we work hard for Him, yet not love Him? I'm going to rephrase that, in a way that makes the answer simple to me. Can we work hard for anyone (doing the best we can do), yet not love that other person? Is the hard work always the result of a commitment to someone else, or is it sometimes self-serving. Let's face it, it does make us feel good to do good things. |
