To him who overcomes [the world through believing that Jesus is the Son of God], to him I will give [the privilege of eating] some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone with a new name engraved on the stone which no one knows except the one who receives it.' Bible Question: What is the interpretation of the white stone in Revelations 2:17? |
Bible Answer: Hello MstrdSeed! Good question. The Ryrie's Study Bible comments on the white stone.. "2:17 hidden manna. Refers to the sufficiency of Christ for the believer’s needs, as manna was for the Hebrews’ during the wilderness wanderings. The white stone may refer to the custom of voting for the acquittal of an accused person by using a white stone (indicating that the believer can be assured of his acquittal before God, cf. Rom. 8:1); or it may refer to the sufficiency of Christ (from the custom of wearing amulets around the neck)." (The Ryrie Expanded Edition NASB Study Bible) "In John’s day the white stone could signify acquittal from legal charges, but it seems best to relate this either to a custom in the Greek athletic games of giving a white stone to the victor in a contest, or to gladiators at the Roman games who had won the admiration of the public and had been allowed to retire from further combat. This symbol of victory over the enemies of God cannot be separated from a new name, which identifies the obedient believer in terms of his or her distinctive character." (The Nelson NKJV Study Bible) "white stone. Certain kinds of stones were used as tokens for various purposes. In the context of a Messianic banquet the white stone was probably for the purpose of admission." (Zondervan's NASB Study Bible) "When an athlete won in the games, he was often given, as part of his prize, a white stone which was an admission pass to the winner's celebration afterwards. This may picture the moment when the overcomer will receive his ticket to the eternal victory celebration in heaven." (The MacArthur NKJV Study Bible) I hope this helps! --Nolan |
