Bible Note: Dear Jamison: I think you are correct in presuming that a thousand is a thousand, in most cases, and in this case there is no reason to think otherwise. Remember too that John is relaying a vision to us, as it is given to him, and in his doing so he is not interpreting them, just giving it out as he literally sees it, sort of like watching a movie, Rev 1:10-11 and then telling what he saw by righting it down. We can assume that he is being literal. Whatever allegory is being used is being used by God: Can we presume that we know what God is thinking? Or that we know what John is thinking, as so many expositors like to do? You certainly can see the danger in that, I'm sure. There are some pretty wild interpretations out there!
