NASB | 3 John 1:10 For this reason, if I come, I will call attention to his deeds which he does, unjustly accusing us with wicked words; and not satisfied with this, he himself does not receive the brethren, either, and he forbids those who desire to do so and puts them out of the church. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 3 John 1:10 For this reason, if I come, I will call attention to what he is doing, unjustly accusing us with wicked words and unjustified charges. And not satisfied with this, he refuses to receive the [missionary] brothers himself, and also forbids those who want to [welcome them] and puts them out of the church. |
Bible Question:
How can Diotrephes cast people out of the church? The church is viewed as a spiritual remnant or a physical organization - and in this verse it seems to be a physical group. |
Bible Answer: Hello Thomas8, The word translated church (Greek - ekklesia) is any group called out to something. In the case of the church, we are called out to Jesus Christ. That being the case, the church can be any size, and it's used multiple ways in the NT: in a home, in a city, or global. In this case, Diotrephes has taken upon himself the right to expel for incorrect reasons. Basically, he's kicking people out of the local church who disagree with him. There are correct situations for expelling someone--see 1 Cor. 5 for an example. Steve |
