NASB | 1 John 3:9 No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 John 3:9 No one who is born of God [deliberately, knowingly, and habitually] practices sin, because God's seed [His principle of life, the essence of His righteous character] remains [permanently] in him [who is born again--who is reborn from above--spiritually transformed, renewed, and set apart for His purpose]; and he [who is born again] cannot habitually [live a life characterized by] sin, because he is born of God and longs to please Him. |

Bible Note: Greetings Theo-Minor! Keep at it! Greek study can be very rewarding. Can you give me the post # for your other point? The weekend is a very busy time for me. :-) Just allow me to say that there is merit to the idea that many expouse that 1 John is speaking of impossibility of habitiual sin in the life of a believer. The present tense does indicate continous or serial action, while the aorist would indicate punctiliar or point of time action. Thus, 1 John is not saying that a believer cannot commit an act of sin, but that a believer cannot continously live in sin, if he is born of God. p.s. - Might I recommend (if you don't already have it), Dana and Mantey's, 'A Manual Grammar of the Greek New Testament'. It is short enough to be readable, but lengthy enough to be useful. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
