AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 John 3:16 By this we know [and have come to understand the depth and essence of His precious] love: that He [willingly] laid down His life for us [because He loved us]. And we ought to lay down our lives for the believers. |
Bible Question:
Reading John10:14-18 having a hard time how these verse describe Christ's death on the cross? |
Bible Answer: Well, to "rightly divide" the word of God, the first step is to ask yourself three questions. Who's talking? Jesus. Who are they talking to? The Jews (John 10:19) And what are they talking about? This seems to be your question. Also, remember that Jesus spoke in parables it is given to some to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven, but that wasn’t given to others listening. (Matthew 13:10-11) Jesus is the good shepherd. Israel is the flock of sheep. "Sheep which are not of this sheep fold" are the Gentiles, from whom the Jews separated themselves. America used to have racial segregation where blacks and whites had separate facilities and such. If you look at historical facts from the Biblical era you will find that the Jews similarly separated themselves from the Gentiles. They had signs in the temple warning against bringing Gentiles in. Paul was falsely accused of bringing Trophimus (a Gentile) into the temple which led to his arrest. (Acts 21:28-29) Jonah didn’t want to go to Nineveh because they were Gentiles, but 3 days in a whale will change anyone’s mind. Anyway, the two flocks being made one (Gentiles joining Jews) is what we call the Church, or the unified body of believers brought together because of a collectively held belief that Jesus is the son of God. So Jesus is the one shepherd of the one flock Where it says "...I lay down My life for the sheep" is talking about how Jesus would die (or lay down His life) for our sins (or to save the sheep). 1 John 3:16 "This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers." The rest of passage is Jesus telling us that He laid down His life only to pick it up again. God commanded Him to do this for two main reasons. 1) Lay it down for the sake of the sheep (to redeem us from sin, sickness, disease, etc.). 2) Pick it up because he was righteous, or in right standing with God and innocent, therefore, He didn’t stay in Hell. He went to Heaven because He defeated Satan with His own innocent blood being shed. He holds the keys of death and Hades (or Hell) so He has the right to remove Himself from it. (Revelation 1:18) I answered this mostly out of my own memory, so if you have any further questions or would like all the scripture references to support what I’m saying I will provide them at your request.
