AMPLIFIED 2015 | 2 Peter 2:20 For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world by [personal] knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, their last condition has become worse for them than the first. |
Bible Question: Hi. I have question regarding 2 Peter 2:20. I am not asking about eternal security as I have that issue settled in my mind. What I am interested in is the portion where it says "and overcome" or in the NASB, it says "and are overcome". It seems to me that adding the "are" changes the meaning. I can't find any study notes that deal with what this phrase is meaning. If "and are overcome" is the correct rendering of the verse, the answer is obvious. If "and overcome" is the correct rendering, it gets a little muddy in my mind. Any help appreciated. Thank you. |
Bible Answer: Greetings Hsmom! The word in question is the Greek word, 'hettao'. In 2 Peter 2:20, it is a Present, passive, indicative, 3rd person, plural verb. What this means is simply that the person being described has been overcome by something else - in this case, the corruption of the world. So, 'are overcome' is probably the best English translation of this verb since it brings out the passive voice of the verb, whereas 'overcome' makes it sound more like an active voice (i.e. - the person is doing the overcoming). I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
