Bible Question: An associate says the Bible is open to an individual's interpretation and that all interpretations are right. I disagree. I'm arguing that the Bible has one interpretation. I read it but, cannot remember where. Help? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Shaz! The verse you are probably thinking of is 2 Pet. 1:20. However, if you go to post # 140282, you will find that this verse does not speak of 'interpreting Scripture, but of the source of Scripture. However, to address you other point, your associate is wrong. Not every interpretation is correct. Scripture is written in a language, and language has rules. Thus, I cannot take the statement from John 3:16 that 'God so loved the world' and say that it really means that God hates the world! :-) I cannot take the command not to commit adultery in Ex. 20:14 and interpret it to mean that it is okay to commit adultery! Only interpretations that follow the rules of language, structure, context, and take the whole of Scripture into account are correct. Interpretations that ignore any of these points will be incorrect. I hope this helps! p.s. - I would recommend an excellent little book for you called, 'How to Undertand the Bible for All It's Worth!' I believe it is by Gordon Fee. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
