Bible Question: I so appreciate the help from Doc !!! but in those scriptures there was not a clear picture of Jesus leading people of the past out of hell...my friend who was asking me about this also asked about Jesus saying to the thief on the cross that today you would be with me in paradise.she said how could that be if he was in the grave. I told her what i thought to be true the God Jesus and the Holy Spirit, were the trinity but were one and that he would be with him that day..I hope I am right in this... |
Bible Answer: Hi, Anita... Thank you for the encouragement. Allow me to encourage you in turn for continuing to seek answers in the Word of God. Do not be too concerned about telling your friend that you do not have a clear answer. This question has been extensively studied by Christians since the earliest days of the church. Consequently, it wouldn't be too surprising if people like you and me struggle to explain. By the way, this topic is a category of Scripture that theologians call "hard sayings of the Apostles." Believers have always recognized that some things in the Bible are simply a struggle to understand. God says in Deuteronomy 29:29a, "The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever." It is far more important for us to deal with the things in the Bible that we do understand than it is to deal with the things that we do not. Nevertheless, here are some sources that you might find helpful. This one gives a short but fairly clear summary of the various perspectives, some of them you may have noticed being expressed by other members of the forum. In addition, it cites more Scripture passages for your consideration. http://www.creeds.net/ancient/descendit.htm Here is another summary that is more detailed, but fairly easy to read: http://www.ligonier.org/learn/devotionals/christs-descent-into-hell/ This one will take more effort to read, but it will provide you with a more detailed discussion: http://www.monergism.com/thethreshold/articles/onsite/christdecended.html Those of us in the forum will be praying for you as you study. God bless you as you seek to know His Word. In Him, Doc |
