NASB | 1 Peter 4:6 For the gospel has for this purpose been preached even to those who are dead, that though they are judged in the flesh as men, they may live in the spirit according to the will of God. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Peter 4:6 For this is why the good news [of salvation] was preached [in their lifetimes] even to those who are dead, that though they were judged in the flesh as men are, they may live in the spirit according to [the will and purpose of] God. |
Bible Question:
Is it possible to interpret this verse such that it's saying something close to the following: "The gospel has been preached even to those who are now asleep in Christ. Though they are now dead, perhaps due to persecution, they live in the Spirit. Though they are dead now, Christ will have the final say." Thoughts? Huron |
Bible Answer: Hi Huron, I would say that you have the tenses correctly in mind. If you're asking about living in the Spirit rather than lower case "spirit" I believe that you are correct in that also. I go with the NKJ for 1 Peter 3:18 and the marginal note for the NASB [Or, Spirit]. We are made alive in the Spirit. So 1 Peter 4:6 says to my mind, "that though they are judged in the flesh as men, they may live according to the will of God in the Spirit." God is Spirit and we now know Christ as Spirit and as God because of His resurrection from the dead. Although your last sentence is an addition, it is certainly the affirmation that we receive of the power of God. From the heart, Ray |
