Bible Answer: Greetings cottonjunior. In the Old Testament, only men, those from the lineage of Aaron were called priests,(Ex 28-9) but in the New Testament, we see that women are included in the "priesthood" of believers.(2 Peter 2:9) We all have a responsibility to bring the truth and light of the Gospel to those in darkness. As far as women go, in the Old Testament, Deborah is mentioned as a prophetess,(Judges 4:4) in the New Testament, Anna (Luke 2:36)is also called a phropetess. Dorcas is described as a disciple. (Acts 9:36) Women were mentioned as "ministers" "Many women were there looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee while ministering to Him." Mt 27:55 However, women are never mentioned as being in positions Church leadership as Bishops or Pastors. (Overseer, Shepherds, elders 1 Tim 3:2) These offices are fulfilled by men. Romans 16:1 describes Phoebe as a "deaconess" or servant or helper in the church. (Both men and women are to fulfill this role!) Acts 18 tells the story of Priscilla and Aquila - they were missionaries (evangelists) and explained the Truth to Apollos. The word "preacher" may be applicable to women as all believers are called to go into the world and PREACH the Gospel! An Apostle was a special category that included men who had been with Jesus. Paul is also called an Apostle on account of his special encounter and teaching by the risen Christ. As a woman, I desire to be obedient to that which the Lord has called me. From Scripture, I know that I am not an Apostle and will not be called to be a Pastor (or a Bishop). I know what my gifts are and in addition to using these for His glory, I endeavor to tell others about Jesus - for God calls all of us to be ready to give an account of the hope that we have in Him! (1 Peter 3:15) Be sure to look up these references! Blessings, mommapbs |
