Subject: Basis, Means, and Purpose of Election |
Bible Note: A Study of 1 Peter 1:1-2……………………………………………….. We saw in our examination of verse one that Peter contrasts the social standing of his audience with their spiritual standing. While they were strangers and aliens in the world, they were chosen by God - Elect. Peter uses the term ‘elect’ four times in this short letter. Two times the term refers to the believers to whom he is writing (1:1 and 2:9) and two times it refers to Christ Himself (2:4 and 2:6). The primary emphasis in this letter of the term 'elect' seems to be one of relationship - chosen. Verse two, gives us 1) The Basis of Their Election, 2) The Means of Their Election, and 3) The Purpose of Their Election. Allow me to translate the first two verses very literally: 1:1 - Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to (the) elect sojourners of (the) dispersion of Pontus, of Galatia, of Cappadocia, of Asia, and of Bithynia, 1:2 - according to (the) foreknowledge of God the Father by (the) Holy Spirit unto obedience and sprinkling of (the) blood of Jesus Chris - Grace to you and may peace be increased. I want to include a literal translation because I think that it shows the breakdown of though more effectively. 1) The Basis of Their Election - Their election was based quite simply upon the foreknowledge of God. The only other verse where this term (prognisko) is used is in Acts 2:23, where it quite clearly refers to God’s determinative plans. Unfortunately, in terms of the C/A debate, the verse doesn’t give us any details about the extent or limitations of election. Peter is writing to believers. Therefore, they are elect! But the overall meaning is clear, Peter’s audience was chosen by God. As we will see later in chapter two, this fact alone puts them at odds with the world and in company with Christ. 2) The Means of Their Election - Their election was accomplished through the agency of the Holy Spirit. The meaning seems to be similar to what Titus 3:5 says, "he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,". 3) The Purpose of Their Election - The ultimate purpose of their election is spelled out in two terms: a) Obedience, and b) Sprinkling of blood (Cleansing). This theme will be a prominent one throughout the letter. Since you are chosen, you should live holy lives. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
