NASB | James 4:4 You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | James 4:4 You adulteresses [disloyal sinners--flirting with the world and breaking your vow to God]! Do you not know that being the world's friend [that is, loving the things of the world] is being God's enemy? So whoever chooses to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. |
Bible Question:
James seems to argue that one cannot love God and have a career. -Is this advocating some type of anti-worldly Christianity? -Does not the Scripture teach that God loves the world? --Should not we also? |
Bible Answer: "4:4 adulteresses. Symbolic language for unfaithful people, as often in the OT. friendship with the world. The Greek word is 'philia', indicating a reciprocal relationship. Unfaithful people love the world, and the world loves them." (Ryrie's Study Bible) Yes, the Bible teaches that God loves the world (John 3:16).. He loves the world (as in: the PEOPLE of the world).. He does not always love the actions of those people or what they do, and many times the actions that are done in the world (Gal. 5:19-21)by PEOPLE are signifying "friendship" with satan rather than God. Therefore, we must 'signify' that we are friends of God by acting like the people of God (Gal. 5:22-26) rather then the characteristics of the world. --Nolan |
