Bible Question: When James says we must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger, is he referring to how we should behave in relationships or how we should be responding to the truth of scripture? or both? |
Bible Answer: Ella, Welcome to the forum. Always read the context. I believe the immediate context is verses 19-27. Verse 20 say "for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God." ... and verses 26-27 reminds us the being religious is closely related to the tongue. I just thought about 1 Cor 13:1-3; love is also important is our relationships. Verse 21 starts with "therefore." So what follows could deal with our anger. The verse deals with getting rid of moral filth and evil, so we can humbly accept the word. This may not be dealing with anger, but being quick to listen and slow to speak. This is also true for verses 22-25. Too many times we want to speak, when we should listen. I know when I am angry, I am slow to listen, even to the word of God. Also, it effects my relationship with God and the world. I hope this helps, Steve PS Four children under 7 and homeschooling. You have been blessed by God. I pray thee well. |
