Bible Question: Kris Lundgaard writes, "The essence of temptation is deceit - to be tempted and to be deceived are the same thing." What do you think of this statement? |
Bible Answer: Perhaps Lundgaard does not mean that to be tempted is to be deceived but that to yield to temptation is to be deceived. The statement that "to be tempted and to be deceived are the same thing" is false, because Christ was not deceived though he was "tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin." Heb 4:15. I understand that Scripture teaches that sin is deceitful: Rom 7:11, "for sin, taking an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me," but I find nowhere it saying that temptation is deceitful or to be tempted is to be deceived. Adam sinned (and plunged us into ruin) but he was not deceived. 1 Tim 2:14, "And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression." Eve was deceived but was Adam tempted? If he was tempted we have another example of temptation without deception. |
