NASB | Hebrews 9:4 having a golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was a golden jar holding the manna, and Aaron's rod which budded, and the tables of the covenant; |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Hebrews 9:4 having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered entirely with gold. This contained a golden jar which held the manna, and the rod of Aaron that sprouted, and the [two stone] tablets of the covenant [inscribed with the Ten Commandments]; [Ex 16:32-34; 30:1-6; Num 17:8-10] |
Bible Question: With reference to the NASB, how did the altar get into the Holy of Holies? |
Bible Answer: Exodus 30:6 And you shall put it before the veil that is before the ark of the Testimony, before the mercy seat that is over the Testimony, where I will meet with you. Many modern translations put the altar inside the veil instead of where this verse clearly places it outside the veil. While I'm not a translator but one that has faith in translators I think one of two things happened here. Since we are not sure of the writer of Hebrews it could be he was confused and misplaced where the altar sat. The other possibility was the word that was translated altar could have been referring to a table within the Holy of Holies not mentioned in Exodus 30 passage upon which the Golden censor sat after the priest carried it in.
