Bible Question: Why did Jesus have to die in order for us to be saved? |
Bible Answer: Greetings chynna! Leviticus 22:21 states that "When a man offers a sacrifice of peace offerings to the LORD to fulfill a special vow or for a freewill offering, of the herd or of the flock, it must be perfect to be accepted; there shall be no defect in it." Therefore, according to the Mosaic law and tradition, a person had to bring the proper "substitute" or sacrifice before God, without blemish, to pay for the 'blemishes' that the person had committed in their life before God. And each animal served as an 'individual' substitute for whoever was giving them up as a sacrifice. However, the people of God proved to both themselves and to God that there was no possible way of keeping his covenant without having to continually be 'justified', so God had to provide an 'end' to this, and to pave a way so that this 'imperfect' covenant would be perfected in every way, for all people, and for all time! Jesus Christ was the only sinless human being, being completely devoid of any sin (Hebrews 4:15), and he was raised up amongst his fellow countrymen (Deut. 18:15,18-19; Luke 2:52). Therefore, not only was Jesus one of "their own" (Luke 4:24), but He was also God, manifest in the flesh (1 Tim. 3:16). So it is as you see here, only Jesus could have provided an appropriate and adequate sacrifice, Himself, for His people and for those who would come to believe. Jesus is God in the flesh (Col. 1:19) and He is timeless (Heb. 13:8)! So you see, only He could be the perfect, unblemished sacrifice for His people, forever paving a way for them to be justified and righteous before God, by only accepting and believing in His sacrifice for them (John 3:16). He had to take on the punishment for every man's sin (which is death: Rom. 6:23) to pay for every man's sin (just like the specific animals that are cited in Leviticus were sacrificed for the sins of the Israelites before the time of Jesus) so that we would forever be justified before God if only we believe in and worship Him! And this new covenant was established in place of the old, where Christ is the mediator (Heb. 9:15). Through Christ and Him alone (Acts 4:12) can we be saved. "For where a covenant is, there must of necessity be the death of the one who made it." (Hebrews 9:16) And only Christ, who lives forever as God the Son, could provide the perfect sacrifice or substitute for every man's sins, since Christ's nature was that of God Himself, who is timeless and lives forever, therefore taking care of all of man's sins, forever! I suggest that you would read the book of Hebrews for more in-depth information, my friend! Blessings to you, Nolan |
