Bible Question:
Why in many verses of Scripture is the word "Lord" sometimes found in all capital letters, "LORD" and in other instances found just with the fist letter in Caps: "Lord" Sometimes the switch even occurs in the same verse. What is the difference between "LORD" and "Lord?" Here is a Bibical example Psalms 110 1 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. 2 The LORD shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies. 3 Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth. 4 The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. 5 The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath. 6 He shall judge among the heathen, he shall fill the places with the dead bodies; he shall wound the heads over many countries. 7 He shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore shall he lift up the head. Can someone please provide me with the proper answer? New Creature |
Bible Answer: Greetings New Creature! In the example you provided, Psalm 110, there are two different words translated as 'LORD' and 'Lord'. 'LORD' is YHWH (Strong's Number 3068) and 'Lord' is Adonay (Strong's Number 136). Here is what the NIV preface says about their usage of 'LORD' and 'Lord': ************************** "In regard to the divine name YHWH, commonly referred to as the Tetragrammaton, the translators adopted the device used in most English versions of rendering that name as 'LORD' in capital letters to distinguish it from Adonai, another Hebrew word rendered 'Lord,' for which small letters are used." ************************* I hope this helps!
