Bible Question: What is the real story behind the giving back of 10 percent. |
Bible Answer: Greetings Glossy44, Abraham, as he was returning from the slaughter of the kings (Genesis 14:18-20 and Hebrews 7:1-2), paid a tenth of all the spoils to Melchizedek, who was a priest of God. Abraham said that God is the POSSESSOR of all things (Gen. 14:22), and he was resolved to give back to God his share in tribute. Later, we see Jacob in Genesis 28:22 pledge a tenth of all that he receives to God, because of the blessing that he received from the Lord (Genesis 28:10-22). Pharoah received a fifth of the harvest (Genesis 47:24-26). Israel, as a nation, gave a tithe (Numbers 18:26). God commanded a tithe (Deuteronomy 14:22-23). Tithes were given to the poor (Deut. 14:28, 26:12). If you pledge to give a tithe, then the Lord requires you to be dependable (Deut. 23:23). Futhermore, we are challenged to tithe (Malachi 3:6-10), and not to deny what should be given back and used for the Lord's purposes. Blessings to you, Makarios |
