Bible Question: How important is the Torah (first 5 books of the bible)? What does Matthew 5:17-18 mean to the everyday Christian? According to some teachers of Messianic Judiasm, the Torah is the focal point of the ENTIRE bible, from Genesis to Revelation. It has been explained to me that everything Jesus did or said referred back to Torah, and that Torah (the law) is FOREVER. If Torah is FOREVER, then where does the NEW covenant come in? I could really use some clarification. |
Bible Answer: Matthew 5:18 gives two time references to choose from concerning when the law will pass away: 1. when heaven and earth pass away, 2. when all is accomplished. Which to choose? In the previous verse Jesus said He came to fulfill the Law. In the context this must be what needs to be accomplished before the Law passes away and the New Covenant becomes the medium through which we have a relationship with God and the forgiveness of our sins. If the Law of the Torah is still in force, then Jesus is not now High Priest because the Levitical priesthood would still be in force (Hebrews 7:11-25) and Jesus' sacrifice would not be applicable to us...we would have to rely on animals (Hebrews 10:3,4). Forgiveness of sins is available ONLY through the all sufficient sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, and this forgiveness is the whole point of the New Covenant. Why did Jesus teach adherance to the Law? He was under that law Himself and it did not pass away until He fulfilled it in His death, burial, and resurrection (Luke 24:44-47). I hope this helps. |
