Bible Note: Dear NYP, Referring back to the following passage: "A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell by the wayside; and it was trampled down, and the birds of the air devoured it. Some fell on rock; and as soon as it sprang up, it withered away because it lacked moisture. And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up with it and choked it. But others fell on good ground, sprang up, and yielded a crop a hundredfold." When He had said these things He cried, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear!" (Luke 8:5-8) Christ explains the meaning of this parable in verses 10 through 18 of the same chapter. There are three scenarios in this passage, representing three different responses to the Gospel. As Baptists, we tend to spread the seed and if there is the tiniest sprout evident or even imagined, we cry, "New convert!" and get him baptized, incrementing the counters, and pat ourselves on the back for being such effective soul winners! Clearly, however, there are many who do not persevere, though they appear to be new members of the family. It is one of these categories to which the people mentioned in Hebrews 6 are members. These are those mentioned in the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith in Chapter 10, paragraph 4. My two mites, at any rate... In Him, Doc |
