Bible Question: What is the "rest of God"? Please refer to the following chapter for some insight. Is there a difference between obedience and belief? Can one obey the law of God and still be called disobedient? (See previous verse) |
Bible Answer: First, the rest of God is Canaan-in the days of Israel, an actual physical place, which was a picture of heaven. It is the time when we can cease from our works, just as God did on the seventh day of creation. (Hebrews 4) Second, there is a difference between obedience and unbelief. Disobedience to God is not doing what he tells us to. Unbelief is not believing he does what he says or is who he says he is. When we don't believe him, we don't do what he says. the law isn't all of it, because he also says to trust in him with all your heart, to acknowledge him in all your ways(Proverbs 3:5,6)We are saved by faith, not works(Eph 2:8). If we refuse to believe in Jesus, that he paid the debt for our sin, we are disobedient. (Hebrews 4:2)We are not relying on God, but on our own works. The Pharisees were great at making laws and keeping them. Jesus called them hypocrites(Matthew 23)because although they obeyed the letter of the law, they disobeyed the spirit of it. |
