NASB | Hebrews 11:26 considering the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he was looking to the reward. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Hebrews 11:26 He considered the reproach of the Christ [that is, the rebuke he would suffer for his faithful obedience to God] to be greater wealth than all the treasures of Egypt; for he looked ahead to the reward [promised by God]. |
Bible Question: Heb 13:13 in the NASB reads - 'bearing his reproach'. I believe the New Jerusalem Bible interperets this - 'bearing his stigmata'. Is this an acceptable translation? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Asken! BradK already provided you with an excellent answer. I would just add that I would hesitate to translate 'reproach' or 'oneidismos' as 'stigmata'. There is a Greek word 'stigma', and to translate 'oneidismos' as 'stigmata' would give the impression that this word was actually used in Heb. 13:13 - which it is not. Now, there is similarity in meaning between the two terms. I would say that 'oneidismos' is the broader term, including insults and personal disgrace. While, 'stigma' refered to physical marks, usually associated with slavary. Paul uses this term of himself in Gal. 6:17 in reference to the beatings he has taken for Christ. So, 'stigma' can be used in reference to marks received from persecution. But, interestingly, Scripture never uses this term of Christ or the marks He received. I hope this helps!
