Bible Question:
I have a question concerning Hebrews 10:26. For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins. What is this scripture saying? If we commit willful acts of disobedience that the Lord will not forgive us? Please help. |
Bible Answer: Greetings Levite7, Hebrews 10:26 "¶ For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins," Here is a bit of commentary on this verse.. "10:26-29 SIN, Judgment- Sin that is continual and deliberate always will produce the judgment of God. This text is closely related to 6:4-6,17-20 in which the terrible sin of falling away from Christ is stated in the strongest terms, followed by a promise of assurance based on the promise of God and the sacrifice of Christ. Here the same terrible sin is asserted in vv 26-31, followed by an appeal to recall "the former days" (vv 32-34), followed again by a statement of hope (vv 35-39). Perhaps v 39 holds the key to this text; it asserts that the soul that truly believes (has genuinely been saved) will not "shrink back" and be "destroyed." See note on 6:1-6." (1) "10:26 sinning willfully. The background is the defiant sin of Num. 15:30-31 (see note there) for which there was no propitiatory offering. there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins. If a person rejects the truth of Christ's death for sin, there is no other sacrifice for sin available and no other way to come to God. Only judgment remains (v. 27)." (2) "10:26-39 See notes on 6:1-8. This warning passage deals with the sin of apostasy, an intentional falling away, or defection. Apostates are those who move toward Christ, hear and understand His gospel, and are on the verge of saving belief, but then rebel and turn away. This warning against apostasy is one of the most serious warnings in all of Scripture. Not all of the Hebrews would respond to the gentle invitation of vv. 19-25. Some were already beyond response."
