Bible Question:
Do Creeds and Confessions still have a place in the modern church? Do they help or hinder the cause of Christ? 2 Tim 4:3 John |
Bible Answer: "What does your church believe?" Someone may ask, "What does your church believe?' Just saying, "Well, we just believe the Bible" is an inadequate reply. Saying that really doesn't tell me anything. Virtually every church says it believes the Bible. And yet churches vary widely in their doctrine and practice. So if, for example, a Pentecostal and a Baptist both said, "My church just believes the Bible", we have to ask what does that mean? Obviously, Pentecostal and Baptist doctrine and practice are not identical. But, if I read a statement of faith (beliefs) from each church, I'd have a better knowledge of what each one believes. Without a creed, confession, or statement of faith, how would I know what your church believes and how would you know what my church believes? Moreover, if I were looking for a church to join, I'd want to know what they believed before I made a commitment. Grace to you, Kalos |
