Bible Note: Hi Hank, "Don't believe everything you read in the newspapers." "Don't believe every word you hear." These are true admonitions are they not? I think that it is important for us to be discerning judges of what is the word of God for us. For Timothy, he knew which were the Holy Scriptures, the sacred writings. He knew the ones that would lead him to knowing the salvation that he needed in Christ Jesus. He knew who taught them to him, and he learned the Scriptures and became convinced of them. I believe that verse sixteen here continues to talk about these sacred writings; he was not talking about all scriptures or about all the information out there for consideration, but rather was talking about the ones that he knew would lead to salvation. These Scriptures, all of them, were spirit-breathed and were *also able to teach, reprove, correct, and train in righteoussness and equips him for good works. But the important thing is that he finds his salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Compare 2 Tim 3:16, "All Scripture is inspired by (God)" with 2 Tim 2:8,9, "Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, descendant of David, according to my gospel,...but the word of (God) is not imprisoned. FOR THIS REASON I endure all things for the sake of those who are chosen, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus..." John 8:47, "He who is of God hears the words of (God); FOR THIS REASON you do not hear them, because you are not of God." We know that Jesus speaks the truth and we can believe Him. We know who spoke the words to us and have learned them and have applied them to our lives. But again, the important thing is that we have obtained the salvation that is in Christ Jesus. 2 Tim 2:16, "But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness, and their talk will spread like gangrene." So here again we need to handle correctly the word of truth and not stray from the truth as we have come to know it. We know that we are His and will abstain from wickedness. We have to be careful what we read and put our faith in. We can remain true, if we stick to the Holy Bible. Colossians 2:6, "As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in (Him), having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude. See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the traditions of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ." We have to look to Christ instead of the world and the traditions of men. We have to be careful what we read that is outside the Scriptures and be certain that their words are spirit-breathed also and are from God. Personally, my rendering of 2 Timothy 3:16, is the one in the margin of the NASB, "Or, possibly, 'Every Scripture inspired by God is also profitable..." What do you think? Hank, Thank you for your continued concern, my friend. I am doing well with my medicines and feeling well. From the heart, Ray |
