Subject: What doctrines are essential |
Bible Note: I consider John MacArthur a mentor since I heard him every day on the radio as a new believer. However in this case he is only partly correct: "The Word of God is not a puzzle. It does not speak in riddles. It is not cryptic or mysterious. It is plain and obvious to those who have spiritual ears to hear. "The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple" (Psalm 19:7). --John MacArthur He is correct in saying that the fundamentals are clear. However, God says He speaks in riddles: Nu 12:8 With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches [02420]; and the similitude of the LORD shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses? Ps 49:4 I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying [02420] upon the harp. Ps 78:2 I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings [02420] of old: Pr 1:6 To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings [02420]. Eze 17:2 Son of man, put forth a riddle [02420], and speak a parable unto the house of Israel; Da 8:23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences [02420], shall stand up. Pr 1:22 How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge? Pr 25:2 It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter. Christ showed the disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13 ff) how all the scriptures spoke of Him. Until He showed them, none of the teachers had seen it before. Those hidden pictures of Him are still hidden in the Old Testament like watermarks behind the literal in types and shadows. |
