Bible Question:
What is Meant by "Inspiration"? -- correction. Charles C. Ryrie (Th.D., Ph.D.) writes: "A Definition "My own definition of biblical inspiration is that it is God's superintendence of the human authors so that, using their own individual personalities, they composed and recorded without error His revelation to man in the words of the original autographs. "Several features of the definition are worth emphasizing: "(1) God superintended but did not dictate the material. "(2) He used human authors and their own individual styles. "(3) Nevertheless, the product was, in its original manuscripts, without error" (Ryrie Study Bible). |
Bible Answer: Inspiration, alternate definition 1. "ad ho·mi·nem 1 : appealing to feelings or prejudices rather than intellect 2 : marked by an attack on an opponent's character rather than by an answer to the contentions made (www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary)" Let's start over, shall we? To avoid ad hominem arguments, I will give an alternate definition of biblical inspiration. This time I will omit the name of the author of the definition. If you want to know who it is, email me and I'll tell you. (See my User Info (Personal Profile) for my email address.) This time let's stick to the definition itself and not concern ourselves with the biography of the definer, shall we? Note also that the definition of biblical inspiration varies little from one evangelical scholar/author to another. ------------- 22:19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. ****Inspiration: Summary. The testimony of the Bible to itself. **** '(1) The writers affirm, where they speak of the subject at all, they speak by direct divine authority. '(2) They invariably testify that the words, and not the ideas merely, are inspired. The most important passage is 1 Corinthians 2:7-15, which see. '(3) The whole attitude of Jesus Christ toward the Old Testament, as disclosed in His words, both before His death and after His resurrection, confirms its truth and divine origin, and He explicitly ascribes the Pentateuch to Moses. '(4) In promising subsequent revelations after the predicted advent of the Spirit (John 16:12-15) our Lord prepared the way for the New Testament. '(5) The writers of the New Testament invariably treat the Old Testament as authoritative and inspired." |
