Subject: SEARCHING FOR THE TRUTH |
Bible Note: Dear Searcher, The church is not obligated to receive monies for "anyone." Churches have legal obligations to be discerning about such things, otherwise their tax exempt status can be revoked. We had a person who wanted us to give money to his son, but he wanted the check written out to the church so that he could take it as a tax deduction. That is an utterly reprehensible and improper type of "donation." (No, his son was not a missionary.) Furthermore, there are doctrinal reasons to limit how money can be designated. We certainly would not want to allow the designation of funds to organizations that are wholly or partially in disagreement with sound doctrine. Nor would we want monies to go to persons who are under church discipline. As a practice, I think it best to render weekly offerings, as part of worship, to the church in an undesignated fashion. This allows the church to allocate the money in ways that they deem best. After all, we may not be privy to all of the factors. It is for these purposes that Christ -- the head of the church -- calls His ministers. If people choose to designate funds, they ought to give them directly to the ministry that they choose. It saves administrative costs for everyone involved. In Him, Doc |
