Bible Question: Could someone explain this verse? what translation is this verse? My question is why cannot God become a man? this may be a red dot also |
Bible Answer: jim: To properly answer your question we first need to define how the Bible uses the term "mystery." The above quoted verse does not imply that God cannot become a man. Instead, it means that the Incarnation (God made visible in human flesh) is something which was previously unknown, but is now made known. "A 'mystery' in Scripture is a previously hidden truth now divinely revealed" (note at Matt 13:11, New Scofield Reference Bible, Oxford, 1967). "In the NT 'mystery' refers to something God has revealed to His people. The mystery (that which was previously unknown) is proclaimed to all, but only those who have faith understand" (p. 1424, Zondervan NASB Study Bible, Zondervan, 1999). (See also the Ryrie Study Bible and The New Compact Bible Dictionary (Zondervan, 1967) which, along with many other reference works, agree on the above definition of mystery in the NT.) So, What is the mystery (that which was previously unknown) of godliness? It's exactly what 1 Tim 3:16 says it is: And great and important and weighty, we confess, is the hidden truth (the mystic secret) of godliness. He [God] was made visible in human flesh, justified and vindicated in the [Holy] Spirit, was seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, [and] taken up in glory. 1 Tim 3:16 The Amplified Bible. This verse tells us what is the thing which was formerly unknown, but now has been made known -- that God was made visible in human flesh and all that follows in the verse. --JVH0212 |
