Bible Question: What does Paul mean on 1Tim2:9 about women with blaited hair not attending church in that manner? How do we today apply that? |
Bible Answer: First we have to be careful how we view church back then compared to today. In the first century church the people went out and lead others to the Lord and then brought them into the church. In today’s church many often depend on the pastor to lead invited friends and loved ones to the Lord. So in today’s church we can expect to find unsaved people attending. Their dress may not be the most appropriate or modest. But what 1 Tim 2:9 is saying I think can be best seen the NLT 1 Timothy 2:9 (NLT) 9 And I want women to be modest in their appearance. They should wear decent and appropriate clothing and not draw attention to themselves by the way they fix their hair or by wearing gold or pearls or expensive clothes. Our society is big on individuality, to stand out in a crowd but in fact most of the time we follow trends. The first guy in church with spiked hair stood out, today the pastor in the pulpit probably has spiked hair or has the middle age receding hair line attempt at it. What 1 Tim 2:9 is saying is we should dress and act being modest and blend in, we aren’t to make ourselves spectacles or go for the shock factor some of our younger generation loves to do. I think we should also dress in our Sunday Best that is not to say we must have designer dress or suit but we should dress in a manner that says we care about how we look. After all we are going into the presence of our Lord and Savior. Today it is quickly becoming acceptable for people to wear to church what they would wear to a ball game or a mud fight. To me I think it says they don’t respect what they are doing. |
