Bible Note: Scribe writes: "I look more at the fruit of peoples lives to tell if their doctrine is correct." ..... The Bereans "searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so." (Acts 17:11). "Beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves" (Matthew 7:15). The only infallible guide for the Christian faith and practice is God-breathed Scripture. It is profitable for doctrine (2 Timothy 3:16). The way men lead their lives is a poor standard by which to measure doctrine. I have known men who presented an outward appearance of moral uprightness, generosity, and kindness. But some were cult members, some agnostics, others atheists. Their lives were a singularly poor yardstick by which to measure whether their "doctrine" was correct. ...... One more point, if I may. How is it possible to look at a Lutheran and know for sure that he is "dead in his sins"? The way I see it, if one views it as unfair to call Joyce Meyer a false teacher, then it seems unfair to come down so hard on the poor Lutherans. Showing that Joyce Meyer teaches false doctrine is fairly easy. Showing that Lutherans, even if you limit them to the ones you know, are dead in their sins would, I submit, be considerably more difficult. To say that Joyce Meyer teaches false doctrine is not judging her salvation but evaluating her teaching. To say that "all Lutherans I know are dead in their sins" is not an evaluation of their teaching but a judgment call concerning their salvation. I surely believe that you did not really mean it so harshly as that. --Hank |
