AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Timothy 2:12 I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet [in the congregation]. |
Bible Question: i would like to know if this holds true if you have a women pastor, she cannot teach or preach...because the way i understand this is paul is talking to the ephesian women at a point in time. and i have had men tell me that a women shall not preach to a man. and i don't think that way.... |
Bible Answer: I agree with your interpretation of passages such as 1 Timothy 2:12. Paul's admonition was sparked by a particular situation in a particular city at that particular time. However, in the passage that follows, 1 Timothey 3:1-7, Paul sets out the requirements for the office of overseer (i.e., pastor, elder, bishop), and it is hard to fit a woman into those requirements. Many scoff at the phrase "husband of one wife," saying that a woman could satisfy that requirement if she were the "wife of one husband." But, in vv. 4,5 it is clear Paul is indeed talking about men exclusively, as they are the head of the household (Ephesians 5:22-24). This, of course, does not prevent women from serving the church in teaching capacities other than pastor. |
