AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Timothy 1:13 even though I was formerly a blasphemer [of our Lord] and a persecutor [of His church] and a shameful and outrageous and violent aggressor [toward believers]. Yet I was shown mercy because I acted out of ignorance in unbelief. |
Bible Question: This verse seems to say that Paul was shown mercy because he didn't realise what he was doing. So then if he had of sinned knowingly, would he not have been shown mercy? |
Bible Answer: Paul obtained mercy does not say that he was excused for what he did. A jury may recommend mercy for a defendant, altho it has found the man guilty, because there are circumstances that justify an easier punishment than strict application of the law might demand. This is the case in Paul's instance, so the Lord showed him mercy because he was an unbeliever--had made no profession toward Christ--and was ignorant of the facts in the matter. |
